Let me start by saying that there are as many
standards and opinions on what is a Class B verses a Class A as there are
registeries and Rat Terrier Clubs so I will limit my version to what is
acceptable through "American Canine Registry" unless otherwise stated.
A well defined Class "A" or "B" should be easily
identifiable without the use of a tape measure.
UNFORTUNATELY this is not always possible so a measurement must be
taken.
Type B's are 2 to 3.5 inches LONGER than they are tall measured from
the ground to the top point of their withers and from the crease of
their neck to the crease of their tail joint.
Better known as TEDDY ROOSEVELT TERRIERS.
Type A's should be less than 2 inches in length as height. Basically
an "A" should be SQUARE BODIED.
A Type A should have suffecient leg length that it is not
misconstrued for a type "B" but must be no more than 2 inches longer
than it is tall.
ALL "A"s are registered as "Rat Terrier".
CLASS B's can be labeled in several ways depending on which registry
that you use and how YOU choose to register it. They are ALL Rat
Terriers but some registries break them down into TYPES and have
different names attached to them. ..........UKC has Rat Terriers for
the "A" type and Teddy Roosevelt Terrier for the "B" type but it should
be noted that the breeder is responsible for getting it measured and
added into the Teddy Roosevelt classification and once this is done then
there is NO going back. UKC DOES NOT allow the crossing of the TYPES for
registerable offspring. ..........UKCI has a verification program
where they are ALL registered as Rat Terriers but their A verses B type
can be placed on the permanent papers. ..........CKC will register
them as either classification of Teddy Roosevelt or Rat Terrier
depending on how you initially registered the parents. They will not
allow the crossing of the types though for future offspring papers.
..........ACR registers them as either classification of Teddy
Roosevelt or Rat Terrier depending on the papers that you send in for
dual registration. They do not allow the crossing of those that are
Teddy Roosevelt to Rat Terrier. If one is registered as Rat Terrier
then you can have it notated through proper verification the TYPE, i.e.
Class A - Class B, on the papers and while ACR will allow the crossing
of the two TYPES they highly discourages the crossing of the two types.
All dogs shown through ACR sponsored shows are required to be measured
for breed standard requirements in height verses length and weight prior
to being judged. Any found to be of DISQUALIFYING BREED STANDARD are not
allowed to be shown.
